Honey Mustard Incident 2024: Part 2 – Subs Sweep Whalers in Spicy Finale
The New Delhi Subs rolled into Hartford for the final installment of the Honey Mustard Rivalry, and, like the perfect dipping sauce, they found a way to blend just enough offense and defense to edge out the Whalers 32-30 in a game that felt more like a condiment commercial than football.
New Delhi QB Cooper Rush may not be a household name, but he played like someone trying to earn a few endorsements, throwing for 188 yards and 2 touchdowns.
“People keep calling me a backup. Well, I just backed Hartford out of the playoffs,” Rush quipped postgame, clearly savoring his newfound confidence.
The Subs' ground game relied heavily on Isaac Guerendo, who rushed for 128 yards and 2 TDs. Guerendo was a late-season pickup who now looks like the MVP of the condiment war.
"I told the team, 'Put the mustard on my back, I’ll carry it across the finish line,'" Guerendo said. “And unlike Hartford, we didn’t forget the honey.”
Hartford QB Justin Herbert delivered a tepid performance, throwing for 225 yards and just 1 touchdown, which is about as exciting as eating a dry pretzel.
Puka Nacua was the lone bright spot for the Whalers, with 178 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. Unfortunately, the rest of the offense decided to pack it in early for their offseason hot dog eating contest.
“I’m not saying we deserved to lose,” Nacua said. “But when you’re outscored by Isaac Guerendo, maybe we kind of did.”
New Delhi’s defense bent but didn’t break, with Jonnu Smith’s 44 yards and a touchdown providing the final squeeze of mustard to secure the victory. Meanwhile, Hartford’s defense showed flashes of brilliance but ultimately couldn’t stop Guerendo from stealing the show.
The Subs finish their season on a high note, sweeping the Whalers and reminding the league that even mustard has its moments. For Hartford, this loss stings worse than spilling mustard on your favorite white jersey—because it came with no playoff berth and no answers.
The Honey Mustard Rivalry officially belongs to New Delhi this season. Now, someone get Guerendo a lifetime supply of dipping sauce. He’s earned it. Cooper Rush said: “The Subs may not win often, but when we do, it’s against Hartford.”
